3 Pine Rivers - By (Unknown)
Which is the real Pine River? Even the natives aren't
sure. Driving north along highway 21, a few miles south of Kincardine, the
traveler sees at least three indications of where the hamlet of Pine River may
be. At the corner of Concession 4 of Huron Township he sees the Pine River
United Church and across from it the community hall. He may well conclude that
this is Pine River. Actually it is locally termed Reid's Corners. One concession
father north he comes upon that hamlet's only industry, the Pine River Cheese
Co-Operative. Along the highway a bit further is a sign reading South Pine River
but this merely indicates the stream that crosses under the road. A half mile
farther is yet another sign Pine River naming the main stream. Still farther
north at Concession 8 are signs indicating that the Ontario highways department
considers this to be the true Pine River. The general store and the homes are
located here. The original Pine River, however, was a couple of miles west of
any of these sites. It was on the Lake Huron shore near the mouth of Pine River. |
